The sound of WAT SUN is essentially one of a jazz quartet, but it sometimes tends towards European improvised music. Each of us thus oscillates between his traditional role as a jazzman, and as an explorer of the acoustic possibilities of his instrument. Our motto: never forget that each individual sound serves the sound of the group as a whole.

Our musical references are quite obvious: let’s quote, among others, Charlie Haden, Paul Motion, Ornette Coleman, but also John Cage and Morton Feldman.

As free expression and improvisation mean a lot to us, we developed our music around simple and melodious themes, but made sure that the tempi, the interpreters, and the “moments”, or phases, were unpredictable. Routine is banished. Each one of our four “voices” is equally important, and has an impact both unexpected and…natural (!) Our music is thus lively, changeable, and often it surprises us as much as it surprises the audience.

Wat Sun

Hugo Costa -- sax.
Gonzo Almeida -- bass
Philipp Ernsting -- drums

is a new experimental music trio operating from Rotterdam. Their music is a joyously harrowing display of urgent bass & sax noise, skewed jazz elements, frantic but meticulous drumming and abrupt moodshifts. Albatre can be seen as part of a micro scene of stalwarts highlighting the crossover of improv, noise and jazz currently made in Holland, revolving around acts such as other Incubate 2012 artist Cactus TruckHeinz Karlhausen & The Diatonics and Dagora
