Matthijs Koenes study ended in 2001 with honors from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Already during his studies, Matt developed a new technique that allows him to meet the very different timbre, articulation and dynamics of the classical and modern music his own. His vision and style of play have the technical possibilities of musical expression but also increases the panpipes. Through this vision and efforts many works for the pan flute, solo, in chamber music in ensembles and organ have been written.

Besides Verso, with which he won several prizes, including the friends circle and concert price in 2003, the prize for contemporary music of the Comradio Competition in Barcelona and the Ibla Grand Prize in Italy, is Matthijs part of several ensembles for contemporary music ensemble Black Pencil with which he makes this year's tours through Ireland, Turkey, France and South America. This ensemble has quickly made famous by its high technical and energetic performances.
His other ensemble, the ensemble Zerafin, currently performs in the Netherlands with a production in cooperation with the Iranian Dutch writer Kader Abdolah. The ensemble has an unusual occupation: Panflute, duduk, Erhu, Qanun, Viola da Gamba, Bass, Mezzo Soprano and Percussion.
